Air via Castlegar, BC.
Winter
Weather Warning.
Castlegar airport is very convenient.
But "Cancelgar" airport
occasionally deserves its nickname
( usually in big December and January
blizzards), so insure your return
connections.
(But, how to
convince the folks back home you were
sorry to get stuck with another powder
day?)
Incoming flights
that expect difficult weather here
will land in Penticton. Passengers
rent cars together for the 4 hour
drive. The highway's well maintained
and very easy to navigate. Sometimes
new friendships can make up for the
longer journey. Sometimes. |
International
flights to Vancouver, BC, and to Calgary,
Alberta, have daily connections to our local
airport Castlegar.
For flight schedules: castlegarcity.com/devserv_air_flight.htm
From Calgary: Central Mountain Air www.cmair.bc.ca
From Vancouver: Canadian Regional www.asaa.ab.ca/asaa.cdnreg.html
From Castlegar
Airport to Rossland
(Ask if you need collecting.
I could usually arrange a ride.)
1) Rent a car.
You probably won't need a 4 wheel drive
if they supply good snows on a front wheel
drive.
www.reservations@budgetnanaimo.com
www.nationalcar.com
It's only a 35 minute drive to Rossland,
via Trail.
Shortcut: 20 minutes from airport, turn
right after you pass the traffic lights
at Cominco ( the world's largest lead-zinc
smelter). Rossland is signed. (Or, if slushy,
turn right a mile further on, in Trail.)
Then, 12 minutes later, when Hwy 3B narrows,
turn left onto Thompson Ave. After 5 blocks,
turn left on Spokane St and you've arrived.

2) Take a taxi.
Book ahead if you can. Castlegar Taxi (250)
368 8400 or
1 877 202 9922. Costs about $55 to
Rossland.

Air via Spokane, Wa., USA.

This reliable airport is an easy 3 hour
drive south of Rossland.
For info: www.spokaneairports.net/airline.htm
Their site will connect you to airlines and car rentals.
From Spokane Airport: Rent a Car.
There is no bus from Spokane this year, but that may change.
Shortcut: About a mile north of Colville turn right
on the Williams Lake road to Northport.
This cuts off a dog-leg through Kettle Falls.
(If the roads are slushy, go via Kettle
Falls, but be sure to turn right there on
Hwy 25 to Northport. Scenic drive.)
The Border. After Northport
cross the Columbia River and then cross
into Canada at the Paterson Border. The
border is pretty reasonable usually. Check
with Canada Customs before if you want.
www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca We don't welcome guns up here. US
alcohol is cheaper, but Canadian beer is
better, eh?
Border Hours. Open 24 hours
coming north. Going south they open at 6am
weekdays, 8am weekends. Close at 9 pm. Bear
this in mind for catching your return flight.
